The Department of History at Sri Vasavi College (Aided Wing) is one of the oldest and most distinguished departments of the institution. It has consistently contributed to the development of historical scholarship by promoting critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and a deep understanding of socio-political transformations across time.
With a strong academic tradition and experienced faculty, the department emphasizes research-oriented learning, historiographical skills, and source-based analysis. The department plays a vital role in preserving regional history, especially the cultural and historical heritage of Tamil Nadu and the Kongu region.
The department also functions as a research-supportive environment, guiding students towards M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes and encouraging participation in seminars, conferences and archival studies.
“History is not merely the study of the past — it is the key to understanding the present and shaping the future.”
The Master of Arts in History (M.A. History) is a two-year postgraduate programme designed to provide advanced knowledge of historical processes, civilizations and methodological approaches.
