The Postgraduate Department of Zoology at Sri Vasavi College (Aided Wing) is one of the pioneering centres of biological sciences in the region, renowned for its academic excellence, research initiatives and commitment to environmental conservation.
Established to promote in-depth biological understanding, the department focuses on both classical zoology and emerging fields such as biotechnology, genetics, ecology and environmental biology. It provides a balanced combination of theoretical instruction, field exposure and laboratory experience.
The department is equipped with modern facilities and a team of qualified faculty members dedicated to fostering scientific curiosity and research skills. Students are trained to appreciate biodiversity and contribute to ecological balance through sustainable practices.
Regular seminars, field visits, study tours, and research projects create a dynamic learning atmosphere that connects biological knowledge with real-world applications.
“Zoology is the study of life — and in our classrooms, life itself becomes the lesson.”
The Master of Science in Zoology (M.Sc. Zoology) is a two-year postgraduate programme designed to provide advanced knowledge of animal biology, physiology, genetics, evolution and environmental science.
The course aims to develop analytical thinking, experimental competence, and research aptitude. It integrates traditional zoological disciplines with modern innovations in molecular biology, immunology, biotechnology and bioinformatics.
Students are exposed to a variety of learning methods — from laboratory experiments and dissections to ecological fieldwork and project-based research — making them well-equipped for careers in academia, research, and environmental conservation.
The curriculum follows the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) under Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, ensuring comprehensive and interdisciplinary learning.
Animal Diversity and Evolutionary Biology

Students complete research projects, field studies, and internships to gain hands-on experience in ecological conservation, laboratory techniques and scientific writing.
The Zoology Laboratories are well-equipped with modern instruments for advanced biological study and experimentation. The facilities include:
Histology and Anatomy Lab – Microscopic study of animal tissues and organs.
Physiology and Biochemistry Lab – Experiments on metabolism, enzymes and hormonal regulation.
Microbiology and Biotechnology Lab – Equipped with centrifuges, incubators, electrophoresis units and microscopes.
Environmental and Field Biology Lab – Supports ecological surveys, water analysis, and biodiversity assessments.
Students gain hands-on training in specimen preparation, staining techniques, genetic studies and environmental monitoring. Fieldwork and study tours to wildlife sanctuaries, marine habitats and research institutions enrich their understanding of natural ecosystems.
To impart comprehensive knowledge of zoology through innovative teaching and research.
To promote awareness of biodiversity, sustainability and ecological responsibility.
To encourage interdisciplinary study and scientific inquiry in biological sciences.
To equip students with technical skills for careers in education, research, and biotechnology.
“Our mission is to inspire curiosity, conserve biodiversity and cultivate research-driven biologists.”
To emerge as a centre of excellence in biological and environmental sciences, promoting advanced research, innovation and sustainable development.
The department envisions producing biologists who contribute to scientific progress while protecting nature and life in all its forms.
“We envision a generation of scientists who explore life to preserve life.”
