The Postgraduate Department of Tamil at Sri Vasavi College (Aided Wing) stands as a beacon of Tamil scholarship and literary excellence. Building upon the strong foundation laid by its undergraduate wing, the department has grown into a centre of advanced study and research in Tamil language, literature, culture and criticism.

The department is committed to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Tamil through innovative teaching, critical study, and creative exploration. Course Overview

The Master of Arts in Tamil (M.A. Tamil) is a two-year postgraduate programme designed to deepen students’ knowledge of Tamil literature, linguistics, grammar, and literary criticism. The course provides a platform for advanced study and research into classical, medieval and modern Tamil texts.

It emphasizes the critical interpretation of literary works, comparative literature, and the study of Tamil folklore, Sangam literature, devotional poetry, modern prose, and grammar. The course also focuses on training students in research methodology, textual editing and translation studies.

The programme offers a comprehensive understanding of Tamil from the Sangam era to contemporary literature, enabling students to appreciate its evolution, aesthetics and relevance in modern society.

About the Curriculum

The curriculum follows the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) of Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, ensuring a balanced focus on literary theory, research, and language enrichment.

Key components include:

  • Classical Tamil Literature – Sangam, Epic and Didactic Works.

  • Medieval and Bhakti Literature.

  • Modern Tamil Poetry, Prose and Drama.

  • Tamil Grammar and Linguistics.

  • Comparative Literature and Literary Criticism.

  • Folklore and Cultural Studies.

  • Translation Studies and Research Methodology.

  • Contemporary Tamil Writing and Media.

Students also undertake independent research projects and dissertations, encouraging original thinking, creative writing and academic contribution.

About the Lab / Language Resource Centre

The department is supported by a Digital Language Resource Centre that provides access to Tamil e-texts, manuscripts, audio-visual archives and research tools.

Students engage in projects on digital Tamil literature, comparative linguistics and media content creation. The centre also facilitates translation practice and academic writing workshops.

Regular interaction with poets, scholars, and researchers further enriches the postgraduate learning experience, bridging tradition and technology.
