The Bachelor of Arts in Tamil (B.A. Tamil) is a three-year undergraduate programme designed to provide in-depth knowledge of classical and modern Tamil literature, grammar, linguistics and comparative studies.
The course develops students’ abilities in critical analysis, creative writing, translation, and research methodology. It also focuses on fostering communication skills and interpretative abilities that are essential in the fields of education, media and public administration.
The programme offers a comprehensive understanding of Tamil from the Sangam era to contemporary literature, enabling students to appreciate its evolution, aesthetics and relevance in modern society.
The curriculum of B.A. Tamil follows the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) prescribed by Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. It is carefully structured to balance literary appreciation, linguistic skills and cultural knowledge.
Classical Tamil Literature: Sangam, Epic and Post-Sangam texts.
Modern Tamil Literature: Poetry, short stories, novels and dramas.
Tamil Grammar & Linguistics: Structure, syntax and phonetics.
Comparative Literature: Tamil and other Dravidian/Indian literatures.
Translation Studies and Journalism: Practical exposure to writing and editing.
Project Work & Viva-Voce: Applied learning and literary analysis.

The Language Resource Centre under the Department of Tamil is equipped with modern digital tools and audio-visual resources that enhance language learning and communication.
Students use multimedia software to improve pronunciation, listening and literary appreciation through interactive sessions.
