About the Department

The Department of Chemistry at Sri Vasavi College (Aided Wing) is one of the most dynamic and research-oriented departments of the institution. Established with the aim of promoting scientific knowledge and innovation, the department has consistently upheld high academic standards through quality teaching, hands-on training and impactful research.

With a team of qualified and dedicated faculty members, the department provides a stimulating environment where curiosity meets creativity. It plays a pivotal role in building a strong foundation in physical, organic, inorganic and analytical chemistry while also encouraging interdisciplinary learning and problem-solving.

Regular seminars, industrial visits, exhibitions, and intercollegiate competitions are conducted to expose students to the latest advancements in chemical sciences. The department is also actively involved in promoting environmental awareness and green chemistry practices.

“Chemistry connects everything — from the molecules of life to the materials of the future.”

Course Overview

The B.Sc. Chemistry programme is a three-year undergraduate degree designed to offer a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of chemistry. The course trains students to analyze, synthesize and interpret chemical data with scientific accuracy and critical reasoning.

The programme introduces students to the fundamental concepts of Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry and provides exposure to instrumental techniques and modern laboratory methods. It also emphasizes the industrial and environmental applications of chemistry in everyday life.

Students develop problem-solving skills and laboratory proficiency that prepare them for careers in education, research, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, food processing and environmental sectors.

About the Curriculum

The curriculum follows the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) of Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, designed to blend academic theory with experimental practice.

Core areas of study include:

  • Inorganic Chemistry – Atomic structure, coordination compounds and periodic properties.

  • Organic Chemistry – Reaction mechanisms, functional group analysis and biomolecules.

  • Physical Chemistry – Thermodynamics, kinetics and electrochemistry.

  • Analytical and Environmental Chemistry – Quantitative techniques and green practices.

  • Allied Papers: Physics and Mathematics.

  • Skill-Based Papers: Instrumental Methods of Analysis and Industrial Chemistry.

Practical sessions form an integral part of the course, where students perform qualitative and quantitative analysis, organic synthesis and instrumental experiments using UV-Vis spectrophotometers, colorimeters and pH meters.

About the Lab / Language Resource Centre

The Department of Chemistry maintains well-equipped laboratories designed to meet modern academic and research needs. The labs include facilities for inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry experiments, equipped with modern instruments such as digital balances, pH meters, calorimeters, conductivity meters, and spectrophotometers.

Students are trained in laboratory safety, accurate measurement and innovative experimentation. Special focus is given to green chemistry practices, waste management and environmental safety.

A Research and Instrumentation Unit supports student mini-projects and faculty research, encouraging an investigative approach to chemical studies.

Mission

  • To impart quality education in physics that integrates conceptual clarity with experimental understanding.

  • To foster analytical thinking, innovation and environmental responsibility among students.

  • To promote interdisciplinary collaboration in chemical research and technology.

  • To prepare graduates capable of contributing to academia, industry and sustainable scientific progress.

“Our mission is to nurture scientific minds that explore, experiment, and evolve.”

Vision

To emerge as a centre of excellence in physics education and research, fostering innovation, experimentation, and knowledge that contribute to scientific and technological advancementTo emerge as a centre of excellence in chemical sciences, fostering research, innovation, and entrepreneurship while promoting ethical and sustainable practices in chemistry
