About the Department

The Department of Zoology at Sri Vasavi College (Aided Wing) is a pioneering centre for biological sciences, dedicated to the study of animal life and biodiversity. Established to foster scientific curiosity and environmental awareness, the department has made remarkable progress in both academics and research.

It has consistently maintained an outstanding reputation for its student-centered teaching, laboratory training and field-based research activities. The faculty members are highly qualified, passionate, and deeply committed to imparting conceptual clarity, experimental competence and environmental responsibility.

The department also focuses on developing a scientific temperament through seminars, field trips, guest lectures, and research projects, encouraging students to explore the wonders of animal biology, ecology and genetics.

“Zoology is the science of life in motion — understanding nature to nurture the future.”

Course Overview

The B.Sc. Zoology programme is a three-year undergraduate course designed to give students an in-depth understanding of the animal kingdom, from molecular biology to ecology and evolution.

The course provides a comprehensive foundation in anatomy, physiology, genetics, biotechnology, ecology and applied zoology. It also introduces modern trends in life sciences, including immunology, environmental biology and molecular techniques.

Through lectures, practical experiments, and field studies, the programme trains students to observe, analyze and interpret biological phenomena scientifically — building skills essential for careers in research, teaching, healthcare and environmental conservation.

About the Curriculum

The curriculum follows the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) of Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, emphasizing both theoretical knowledge and laboratory application.

Core areas of study include:

  • Invertebrate and Vertebrate Zoology.

  • Cell Biology and Genetics.

  • Biochemistry and Microbiology.

  • Physiology and Developmental Biology.

  • Evolution and Ecology.

  • Immunology and Biotechnology.

  • Environmental Biology and Conservation.

  • Applied Zoology (Apiculture, Aquaculture, Sericulture).

Students gain practical exposure through laboratory work, field visits, and project assignments. The inclusion of elective and skill-based courses ensures that graduates are prepared for advanced studies and professional pathways.

About the Lab / Language Resource Centre

The Department of Zoology houses well-equipped and specialized laboratories designed for practical learning and research in animal sciences. The facilities include:

  • UG Zoology Lab for dissection, microscopy and specimen study.

  • PG & Research Lab for microbiology, biochemistry and molecular biology experiments.

  • Environmental and Human Genetics Labs equipped with centrifuges, incubators, electrophoresis units and microscopes.

The department also maintains a museum with preserved specimens, models and charts, enriching the students’ understanding of animal diversity. Field studies in forests, aquaculture farms and ecological sites further strengthen experiential learning.

Mission

  • To provide quality education in zoological sciences that integrates theory, experiment and field study..

  • To promote awareness of biodiversity, ecology and environmental conservation..

  • To nurture scientific thinking, curiosity and ethical responsibility among students.

  • To prepare students for careers in research, education, environmental management and life sciences industries.

“Our mission is to transform curiosity into knowledge, knowledge into discovery, and discovery into service for life on Earth.”

Vision

To emerge as a centre of excellence in biological sciences, fostering innovation, research, and conservation of biodiversity.

The department envisions producing graduates who understand life processes in depth and apply their knowledge for sustainable development, public health, and environmental protection.

“We envision a generation of life scientists who protect and preserve the living world through knowledge and compassion.”

Career Opportunities

Graduates of B.Sc. Zoology can pursue a wide range of careers in academic, scientific and environmental sectors, including:

  • Research & Development (Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Environmental Studies).

  • Wildlife and Forest Departments.

  • Fisheries, Sericulture and Apiculture Industries.

  • Public Health & Laboratory Services.

  • Environmental NGOs and Conservation Projects.

  • Pharmaceutical and Biotech Industries.

  • .

Civil Services and Scientific Research Organizations.

Many graduates also pursue postgraduate and research programmes in specialized fields such as Genetics, Molecular Biology, Environmental Science, and Biomedical Research.

“A Zoology graduate from Sri Vasavi College becomes a guardian of life — studying, sustaining and safeguarding nature’s diversity.”
