About the Department

The Postgraduate Department of Chemistry at Sri Vasavi College (Aided Wing)* is a distinguished centre for advanced learning, experimentation, and innovation in chemical sciences. Since its inception, the department has been committed to nurturing scientific excellence through quality education, rigorous research and environmental responsibility.

The department boasts a team of highly qualified and research-oriented faculty members who provide expert guidance in both theoretical and practical chemistry. It fosters a spirit of inquiry and innovation through interactive teaching, problem-solving, and project-based learning.

Students are regularly exposed to seminars, workshops, industrial visits and guest lectures by leading chemists and researchers. The department also emphasizes the importance of eco-friendly laboratory practices and green chemistry to promote sustainable development.

“Chemistry is the science of transformation — turning knowledge into innovation and molecules into miracles.”

Course Overview

The Master of Science in Chemistry (M.Sc. Chemistry) is a two-year postgraduate degree designed to provide an in-depth understanding of physical, organic, inorganic and analytical chemistry.

The course develops students’ theoretical knowledge, experimental techniques, and research aptitude. It also integrates recent advancements in spectroscopy, polymer chemistry, nanoscience and computational chemistry to align with modern scientific and industrial demands.

Students are encouraged to apply their chemical understanding to real-world problems in healthcare, materials, energy and environmental protection, thereby connecting academic learning with social responsibility.

About the Curriculum

The curriculum follows the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) prescribed by Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, offering flexibility and research-oriented learning.

Core areas of study include:

  • Inorganic Chemistry – Coordination chemistry, organometallic compounds and bioinorganic chemistry.

  • Organic Chemistry – Reaction mechanisms, stereochemistry and synthetic strategies.

  • Physical Chemistry – Thermodynamics, kinetics, quantum chemistry and spectroscopy.

  • Analytical Chemistry – Instrumental analysis, separation techniques and data interpretation.

  • Electives: Environmental Chemistry, Polymer Science and Medicinal Chemistry.

  • Research Component: Mini-projects, industrial training and dissertation work.

Laboratory courses complement classroom learning through quantitative analysis, synthesis, titration, and instrumental techniques such as *UV-Vis, IR and NMR spectroscopy.

About the Lab / Chemistry Laboratories

The department houses well-equipped laboratories that cater to both teaching and research requirements. The labs include:

Physical Chemistry Lab – Conductivity, calorimetry and phase equilibrium experiments.

Organic Chemistry Lab – Synthesis, purification and identification of organic compounds.

Inorganic Chemistry Lab – Qualitative and quantitative analysis of metal complexes.

Instrumental Analysis Lab – Equipped with UV-Vis spectrophotometers, flame photometers, conductivity meters and potentiometers.

Safety and precision are top priorities in all laboratory activities. The department also operates a Research and Instrumentation Facility for project work and faculty research, promoting a culture of innovation and hands-on scientific inquiry.

Mission

  • To impart advanced knowledge in chemical sciences with emphasis on experimentation, innovation, and sustainability.

  • To nurture analytical and problem-solving skills through modern laboratory practices.

  • To encourage interdisciplinary research in areas such as materials science, biochemistry and green technology.

  • To prepare graduates for professional excellence in teaching, research and industry.

“Our mission is to shape chemists who understand, innovate, and contribute responsibly to society.”

Vision

To emerge as a centre of excellence in chemical education and research, fostering innovation, environmental awareness and industry collaboration.

The department envisions producing chemists who combine scientific integrity with creativity and contribute meaningfully to national and global scientific progress.

“We envision a generation of chemists who see discovery as service and science as a solution.”
