About the Department

The Postgraduate Department of Economics at Sri Vasavi College (Aided Wing) is one of the most vibrant academic divisions of the institution, committed to nurturing economists with analytical ability, ethical values and a deep understanding of socio-economic dynamics.

Course Overview

The Master of Arts in Economics (M.A. Economics) is a two-year postgraduate programme that provides comprehensive knowledge of economic theories, quantitative methods and policy applications.

The course covers both classical and contemporary schools of economic thought, enabling students to analyze global and national economic issues critically. It also trains students in data interpretation, econometric modeling and applied research — essential skills for professional economists.

This programme serves as a foundation for careers in academia, research, civil services, banking, and economic consulting.

About the Curriculum

The curriculum follows the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) of Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, combining conceptual rigor with practical orientation.

About the Lab / Language Resource Centre

The Department of Economics maintains a Digital Resource Centre equipped with computers, data analysis tools, and statistical software for quantitative research. Students are trained in MS Excel, SPSS and data visualization techniques to enhance their analytical and research capabilities.

The department also maintains a small Economic Data Archive with access to reports from RBI, CSO, NITI Aayog and World Bank databases, supporting project work and research initiatives.

Workshops and hands-on sessions are organized to familiarize students with real-time data interpretation, policy drafting and econometric analysis.
