The Department of Physics commenced its academic journey in the year 1978–79 with the introduction of the B.Sc. Physics Programme, sanctioned with an initial intake of 32 students. This marked the beginning of its contribution to undergraduate Physics education. A major milestone was achieved in the year 2011, when the affiliating University recognized the department as a Research Centre. This recognition enabled the introduction of M.Phil. and Ph.D. Programmes, transforming the department from an undergraduate teaching unit into a comprehensive hub for advanced research and doctoral studies in Physics.

Over the years, the department has demonstrated strong academic and research excellence. The students of Physics department have secured over 25 University ranks including Gold medal. The department has received more than ₹20 lakhs in funding for major and minor research projects from agencies such as UGC and DST, and has successfully organized a UGC-sponsored national-level seminar with a grant of ₹1 lakh. The research output of the department is significant, with more than 30 M.Phil. and 20 Ph.D. degrees awarded and around 200 research articles published in reputed National and International journals.

Graduates of the department have progressed to higher studies at prestigious institutions such as IISc, NITs, and various central and state universities. Alumni are well placed in diverse sectors including education, administration, uniformed services, and the IT industry, reflecting the department’s strong academic foundation and career orientation.
