About the Department
The Department of Economics of Sri Vasavi College was established in the academic year 1967–1968. It is one of the oldest departments of the institution and offers B.A. Economics programme with an approved intake of students. The Department focuses on providing strong foundational knowledge in economic theory along with practical applications. The curriculum includes both traditional economics subjects and computer-related courses, enabling students to adapt to modern economic practices.
The programme aims to develop students’ understanding of economic systems, market structures, macroeconomic conditions, and policy frameworks. Students are trained to analyze real-world economic problems and suggest possible solutions, thereby enhancing their analytical and decision-making skills, towards economic growth, development theories, fiscal and monetary policies, and budgetary systems. The Department strives to produce graduates who are capable of contributing effectively to society and pursuing higher education for competitive careers.
The Department has also made significant contributions in research and academic excellence. Faculty members have undertaken UGC-funded research projects on topics such as water pollution, solid waste management, rainwater harvesting, and land use patterns in Tamil Nadu. The Department also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with IFC – InfoTech Solutions for a certificate training course of Tally Prime. In addition, the Department has organized seminars and conferences at national and state levels, promoting academic interaction and knowledge sharing.
The Department has produced University Rank Holders, reflecting its academic excellence. Students have secured top ranks consistently over the years. Abirami V. (1st Rank), Vadivazhagi (3rd Rank), Gomathi M. (3rd Rank), Sathya R. (3rd Rank), Kokila Y. (3rd Rank), Kavitha M. (4th Rank), Renuka M. (6th Rank), Revathi R. (7th Rank), Viji C. and Kavitha R. (8th Rank), Saravanan M. (9th Rank), and Venkateshvaran A. (10th Rank) These achievements highlight the consistent academic performance and dedication of the students in the Department. At present, the Department has one Ph.D. Research Scholar, contributing to the research environment and academic development of the Department.
