Department of Commerce

The Department of Commerce was established in 1967 with the Pre-University Course. It is the pioneer department of Sri Vasavi College and one of the earliest among colleges in and around Erode district.

The Department offers four programmes: B.Com (1969), M.Com (1975), and research programmes including M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Commerce from 1975 onwards. So far, the Department has successfully nurtured 298 M.Phil. and 89 Ph.D. graduates.

Currently, the Department has nine full-time faculty members, all holding Ph.D. degrees with expertise in various domains of Commerce, along with NET/SET qualifications.

The Department maintains a library with 352 books for both staff and students. The Golden Jubilee of the Department was celebrated on 29th December 2019. To commemorate this milestone, a Knowledge Resource Centre was established with 220 books for subject knowledge and competitive examinations, supported by a distinguished alumnus.

Competency Development Courses

Since 2008, the Department has been offering a Career-Oriented Certificate Course in Office Management under Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, benefiting more than 50 students every year.

With UGC support of ₹7,00,000, a computer laboratory with 26 systems has been established to support practical learning.

To enhance employability, the Department offers Add-on and Value-Added Courses such as Tally Prime with GST, Advanced Tally with Power BI and Data Query in collaboration with GP Skills Development Centre, Bhavani, Erode.

A Value-Added Course on Business Data Analysis using SPSS is offered in association with C Cube Technologies, Erode. Training in Aptitude and Logical Reasoning is also provided in collaboration with United Training Services India Limited, Karnataka.

The Department is associated with the Commerce and Management Association of India, which supports academic and research enrichment.

Academic and Research Milestones

The Department has produced 18 University Rank holders. Faculty members have received minor, major, and collaborative research projects funded by UGC and ICSSR, New Delhi.

The Department has organized Management Development and Entrepreneurship Development Programmes with support from MSME, Government of India.

A Consumer Club functions actively to create awareness about consumer rights. Students demonstrate strong employability, securing positions in reputed organizations, government services, entrepreneurship, and research careers.

Ph.D. scholars benefit from the Tamil Nadu Government Scholarship, receiving ₹1,00,000 per year to support their research and academic progress.
